MONDO Mystery Movie XI Recap

1511248_10202220155179704_726018292_n

Last night MONDO held their eleventh MONDO Mystery Movie event in Los Angeles at the Crest Theatre.

Tickets to the show sold out within seconds and the lucky attendees did not know what film they’d be watching or which artist would create the limited edtion poster designed specifically for the event.

I was fortunate to attend last night and the line of people was buzzing with speculation of what the movie might be. When we entered the theater, we were asked to remove our shoes as we were told it was a historic building. Strewn across the floor was what appeared to be shattered glass (fake rubber movie glass).

1477908_10151932713793172_1932723380_n

Rumors were immediately confirmed; we were going to see Die Hard as the glass was a key element in the 25 year old movie.

MONDO Chief Creative Officer, Justin Ishmael welcomed the audience and then introduced a special guest, Reginald Veljohnson who played Sgt. Al Powell in the iconic action flick! The jovial actor shared a story of how he was chosen for the role and then we were transported back to 1988 watching a 35mm print when Bruce Willis still had hair!

1422881_10102021465498765_1467328061_n

Over two decades later, the movie still held up and was thoroughly enjoyed! Ishmael then revealed the exclusive poster by Laurent Durieux which was available in a regular edition of 450, a variant of 150 and a metal variant of 80. The prints came with a handbill by Tyler Stout featuring Sgt. Al Powell and a replica bearer bond.

As the audience was about to exit the theater to pick up their prized prints, Ishmael said there was one more thing…under one seat was a “detonator” to which everyone jumped up and checked the bottom of their seats. One lucky guest received a one-of-a-kind super glass printed variant!

MONDO Announces Solo Show For Artist Laurent Durieux Opening On February 7, 2014

MondoGallery_Durieux_Digital

MONDO is pleased to announce Laurent Durieux’s first solo show at the gallery in Austin, TX (4115 Guadalupe Street), beginning on February 7, 2014 at 7:00 PM and running through March 1.

Durieux will offer new and exciting renditions of classic films like Back to the Future, The Birds & Forbidden Planet to name a few.

Durieux was born in Belgium and studied graphic design at the College of Advertising and Design in Brussels. After over 20 years as an illustrator, he made his way into the world of screen-printed movie posters, creating new art for films such as The Iron Giant and King Kong.

A preview of the artist’s screen prints for the gallery show can be seen below.

“The bloody beak of the crow is a direct reference to the scene where the neighbour is found in his bedroom by Jessica Tandy with his eyes missing. I originally wanted to place an eyeball in the crow’s beak, but I thought it was a bit too gory for a Hitchcock movie… so I toned it down a notch. I really love the variant on this one,” said Durieux.

“Man, I love this movie! So retro-futuristic, so naive, so kitsch! That’s really my dope! Robby the Robot is iconic which is why I had to put it as THE star of the movie poster. The original poster is just sublime, the colours are just so vibrant, and so I tried to emulate that impression on my own take of this science fiction classic. This poster is the piece that took me the longest to finish, almost 2 months! I think it was worth the effort and the number of layers!” said Durieux.

Odd City To Release The Godfather Print By Laurent Durieux On November 17, 2014

Odd City, in partnership with the Paramount Pictures Licensing, is proud to announce a limited edition screen print for Francis Ford Coppola’s classic, The Godfather, by Laurent Durieux. This 1972 film, adapted for the screen by Coppola, is widely considered the most influential film in the gangster genre. Artist Laurent Durieux, in his distinctive style, has captured a turning point moment from the film.

The Laurent Durieux Godfather prints will be in a regular edition, variant edition and wood edition. The wood edition will have the regular edition color way.

These prints represent the first set of three, one for each of the three films.

Here is what the artist had to say about this special project:

“The Godfather films are amongst my favorite movies of all time, period. I grew up with these movies. So many movies are referring to GF nowadays, and fantastic TV shows like The Sopranos (which I love) hint constantly to the masterpieces from Francis Ford Coppola. The Godfather inhabits us all. It’s part of our general culture. It should be taught at school! It is such a milestone in cinema history too! It’s really impossible to say anything negative about The Godfather. It doesn’t get any better than this!”

All editions are printed by SP Productions in Brussels and will be personally signed and numbered by Laurent Durieux. These prints are expected to begin shipping the first week of December

The Laurent Durieux Godfather prints will go on sale Monday, November 17, 2014 on the Odd City Store around 11am CST, and will begin shipping the first week of December 2014.

Head over to Odd City’s official website for more information.
